Q : why start to do creative work

I have done creative work since school – and even though I moved into graphic design when I went to college I continued to paint in my spare time. Since I got my studio space 5 years ago I have put a lot more time into it and take it more seriously. It has become a necessity.. for my mind. In the same way some people meditate or do yoga,I have to create art otherwise I don't feel right. I also love the process – and get excited about the possibilities. So I both need and want to do it.

Q : when was the moment to choice the material (Wood)

2 years ago – it felt like the logical step from doing collage work on canvas. My painting work uses blocks of colour and found materials to create collage. It is also based around the ideas of urban landscape and perspectives. So I moved into using wood to create flat works – and then started playing with the additional dimension.Wood is a lovely material to work with – versatile, forgiving and it has potential for limitless textures and finishes.

Q :what does these art works mean to you

Landscape.. in a very broad sense. The shapes, textures & structures are all inspired by the landscapes in the cities I have lived in & visited. With my future works I plan to add an element of interaction – which takes this idea further still as we modify and interact with our urban environments.

Q : what message you want to convey through the works

That design, beauty and interest can be found in the simple geometry of our cities. We don't need to buy new objects or the latest expensive furniture – we can create something new from the things we discard.

Q : why come to Taiwan

I was invited by Cooking Together – and I always love to travel and explore new countries.I'll be honest  – Taiwan wasn't a country I knew much about – but when I started doing some research – it sounded interesting. Now I'm here I am excited by the balance between traditional and modern… it feels like a country that is reinventing itself and looking forwards to the future – without forgetting it's traditions and history. I love it.

Q : what do you think about Cooking Together to the artists?

It's a great concept – and is a new way of thinking that seems to be happening in many places.Social & communal based creativity – pulling people together to create & inspire each other and other people.
It's also what Cement Gallery is about – working with each other to stage events and activities by creative people for creative people. It also makes art more accessible, both for the artists and for the public – which is the way it should be!

This refers to the fact that when I was a child – in the 70's and 80's – a lot of toys and games were made in Taiwan – and the game or box would have this written on it. Now I am here making art – but using recycled, found materials… as opposed to the plastic, industrially produced objects I remember as a child. When I told a friend of mine in London that i was coming here… he asked me to bring him something back which is "Made In Taiwan". Maybe I will – but it might be made from old wood instead of plastic!
